Tongan National Youth Congress to showcase coconut products range

Tonga National Youth Congress (TNYC) is the umbrella organisation in Tonga focusing on the interests of the country’s youth

Its goal is to better the welfare of the youth in Tonga through programmes that foster responsibility, citizenship, community service and leadership.

The TNYC, established in 1991, is the biggest local NGO with offices in the six main islands. As well as sports, environmental awareness, education, health and mental wellbeing, TNYC also focuses on entrepreneurship, vocations and careers.

One of the areas it is actively involved in is helping youth to set up agricultural activities and projects from which they can benefit.

Youth Business Units have been set up for organic virgin coconut oil and vanilla, as part of a sustainable livelihoods programme. Young people are also guided through the process of meeting organic standards in their work, as part of preparations for certification. TNYC is the national focal point for organics in Tonga and a member of POETCom (Pacific Organics Ethical Trade Committee).

The TNYC uses these activities as a means of supporting youth to improve their livelihoods.

TNYC will be showcasing its organic coconut oils range at Pasifika 2017. This will include virgin coconut oil, body oil and coconut soap.

“We are hoping to find market outlets for our product and exploring opportunities in New Zealand,” says Drew Havea, President of TNYC, who will be personally representing the congress at the Pasifika Festival.

“We are very appreciative of the opportunity given us by Pacific Trade & Invest,” Mr Havea said. “I would like to make appointments for discussion with potential opportunities in Auckland.”
