Digicel Tonga presents $18,000 pa’anga to Special Olympics Team Tonga

The Tonga Special Olympic Team preparations for the World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi have been boosted with the announcement of $18,000 TOP sponsorship from Digicel Tonga today.

Digicel Tonga CEO Francis Thomsen said: “This is an on-going partnership which stretches back years to support Special Olympics not only in Tonga but across the Pacific in Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu and Nauru.  It is a privilege for us to see first-hand the hard work, dedication, determination and the qualities which make these athletes inspirational role models and ambassadors for the country.”

Special Olympics Team Tonga will be sending an eight-member contingent to the world meet with 4 athletes and 4 officials.

Mr. Thomsen went on to say, “That Special Olympics is very dear to our Founder and Chairman, Mr. Denis O’Brien’s heart and we are extremely excited for the opportunity to partner with Team Tonga in their quest for medals in Abu Dhabi.”

Team Tonga will be joining over 7,000 athletes from more than 170 countries at the world games, which will run for a week from March 14-21.

Special Olympics Tonga representative, Ms. Vanessa Heleta expressed her appreciation at the huge support from Digicel Tonga in supporting Team Tonga to the World Games in Abu Dhabi. 

“This year Team Tonga will compete in athletics - 100 meters and the Shot Put.”

They will leave for Abu Dhabi in the first week of March.
