Minions crosses $1 billion box office mark

Minions has joined the likes of Frozen and Toy Story 3 at the top of the list of highest grossing animated movies of all time.

As of Thursday (August 27), the Despicable Me spin-off hit the billion dollar mark worldwide, making it the third biggest animated movie of all time, reports Entertainment Weekly.

Minions easily won the US box office in its debut weekend with $115 million and has since gone on to make $321.9 million in the North American domestic box office and $682 million internationally.

While Disney is still sitting comfortably at the top of the list - Frozen (2013) is number one with $1.27 billion, quickly followed by Toy Story 3 (2010) with $1 billion - there's still time for Minions to overtake either film as the movie has yet to open in Italy, Turkey, China and Greece.

The movie tells the story of three yellow minions who were recruited by super villain Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock) and her husband Herb (Jon Hamm) in a bid to help them take over the world.

Steve Carell, Michael Keaton, Allison Janey and Steve Coogan also lend their voices.
