Reports of cyclone damage in Fiji

There are reports in Fiji that houses and crops have been damaged on Ono-i-Lau as Tropical Cyclone Winston passed the island early this morning.

Reporters from Fijivillage spoke to the Turaga Ni Koro, Filipe Colati, on Ono-i-Lau, who said they experienced strong and devastating winds late last night.

He said the winds were stronger than Cyclone Ula and that five houses have been destroyed in Dakuni village.

Mr Colati said there was also extreme damage to vegetation.

Meanwhile Jone Soko from Doi village in Ono-i-Lau said their root crops were destroyed by strong winds last night.

A gale warning remains in force for Ono-i-Lau, Vatoa, Fulaga, Ogea, Kabara, Namuka, Komo, Moce, Oneata and Lakeba.

A strong wind warning remains in force for the rest of the Lau group and Lomaiviti group.

At 6am this morning, Winston was located about 170 kilometres northeast of Ono-i-Lau, or about 270 kilometres southeast of Lakeba.

The Fiji Metservice said Winston was moving further away from Fiji.

However, it said the system was expected to return to Fiji in the weekend.
