Early voting starts in Fiji

Voters go to the polls in remote areas of Fiji this week.

The pre-polling starts today and lasts until Saturday.

Eleven percent of Fiji's 630,862 are due to vote early at polling stations on remote islands and inland villages.

Ballot papers have been sent off with teams of elections officials and police on ships, planes and helicopters to 587 venues around the country.

The elections office said ballot papers being transported to a Vanua Levu polling station were under police guard on Sunday after an accompanying vehicle carrying elections staff veered off the road.

No one was seriously injured, according to intital reports.

Intense campaigning has continued over the weekend with just ten days to go before most of the country goes to the polls on 14 November.
