Japan earthquake: Large 6.1 quake strikes off coast near Fukushima

An earthquake struck off the coast of Japan near the Fukushima power plant.

The Japan earthquake has registered 6.1 magnitude on the Richter scale.

The US Geological Society (USGS) said it struck at a depth of six miles.

It occurred 174 miles east of Kamaishi at 5.37pm UTC.

No tsunami warnings are currently in place.

The earthquake occurred a day after more than 200 people died in Mexico City during a 7.1 quake.

In 2011 Japan was hit by a huge earthquake and equally devastating tsunami.

A nuclear meltdown occurred at Fukushima's power plant after the waves knocked out the centre's cooling system.
