Injury forces early termination of Manu Vatuvei's contract with Salford

Former Kiwis winger Manu Vatuvei has been released early from his contract with English side Salford.

After playing the side's final eight matches of 2017, Vatuvei has taken no part in the current Super League season after severely damaging his Achilles tendon in a freak training accident in February.

His contract was set to expire at the end of this season, but the 32-year-old will part ways with the Red Devils immediately.

"Unfortunately, the injury Manu sustained in pre-season meant that he would be out for the full season," said Salford director Ian Blease.

"We had hoped that Manu would have played a significant part in our 2018 campaign however we now feel that it is best for both parties for Manu to return home.

"Everyone at the club would like to wish Manu the best of luck for the future."

Despite the premature exit, the Tonga international would have had a deal struck to ensure full pay-out as per the terms of his original contract.

It's unclear where the man known as "The Beast" goes from here, but a return to his beloved Warriors, for who he scored 152 tries through 226 appearances, would seem unlikely.
