Luatua, Whitelock to face ABs

Add Steven Luatua and Luke Whitelock to the contingent of Kiwis with points to prove in Robbie Deans' Barbarians squad to face the All Blacks in their November tour opener at Twickenham this weekend.

And while we're at it we might throw in rising young wings Vince Aso and George Bridge as well, with Saturday's festive clash (early Sunday NZT) handed a predictable Kiwi flavour with the announcement of the Baabaas squad for the Killik Cup clash.

With the Baabaas coached by a pair of New Zealanders in Deans and his one-time Crusaders flanker Scott Robertson, there was always going to be a fair smattering of Kiwis in the mix for the clash against the All Blacks, and one to follow against Tonga at Thomond Park on November 10.

And so it has come to pass, with the initial seven of 54-test wing Julian Savea, World Cup-winning halfback Andy Ellis and Super Rugby standouts Mitch Drummond and Richie Mo'unga (Crusaders), Dom Bird and Atu Moli (Chiefs) and Dillon Hunt (Highlanders) joined by a further half-dozen New Zealanders.

That group includes now UK-based former All Blacks in Luatua and Ben Franks, as well as in-form loose forward Luke Whitelock who has played so well in 2017 for both the Highlanders and Canterbury, and must be considered unlucky not to have been included in Steve Hansen's touring squad of 37.

The other Kiwis called up are the New Zealand-based trio of Aso, Bridge and popular Highlanders and Hawke's Bay utility back Richard Buckman.

The inclusion of Savea in the Baabaas has created plenty of attention after his high-profile axing from the All Blacks in 2017, with Hansen urging the powerful World Cup-winning wing to have a "big off-season" and rediscover his love of rugby.

Hansen has denied that Savea has been thrown on the scrapheap and said lining up against the All Blacks was a "big opportunity" for him to impress against his old team.

A number of other Kiwis probably come into that category as well.

Luatua was in and out of the national squad when he was in New Zealand and will be out to show his qualities have not waned now he has joined Bristol in the English game.

Whitelock will enjoy the chance to measure himself on the international stage after not being required for the All Blacks since his one and only test in 2013, and the likes of Aso and Bridge have the opportunity to show their burgeoning games translate to the higher level.

Drummond, Mo'unga, Bird, Moli and Hunt will all join the All Blacks to supplement them for the match against the French XV in Lyon on November 14, and they too will be looking to press their claims at Twickenham.

Deans has also added a third UK-based player in Gloucester flanker Ruan Ackermann,as well as two Australian members of the Barbarians side beaten 31-28 by the Wallabies in Sydney last Saturday in wing/centre Taqele Naiyaravoro and lock Sam Carter.

There is also a strong South African contingent including former Springboks captain Adriaan Strauss and Stormers flyhalf Robert du Preez, who led Western Province to last weekend's Currie Cup final victory over the Sharks.
