Tonga A to play for late Queen Mother

The Tonga A will be playing for their late Queen Mother, Halaevalu Mata'aho in the World Rugby Pacific Rugby Challenge (PRC) which will be held at the ANZ Stadium in Suva from Friday.

Tonga A team arrived in the country on Monday dressed in their traditional attire and wearing black to mark their mourning period.

Fiji Times reports former Suva captain Isileli Fatani, who is now coaching the side, said they wanted to win the title this year.

"We are ready to face Fiji Warriors in our first game of the competition. The boys are confident of a good outing," Fatani said.

"The team has been preparing for the past two months for the competition. We have only six players who played for Tonga last year while the others are new to the team.

"We are looking forward to the tough competition as we know Fiji has always been a tough team to beat, especially playing at home."

Fatani, while studying at the then Fiji Institute of Technology (now Fiji National University) in Suva, played for the Suva rugby team in 1987 and 1988.

"This team is better prepared for the challenges ahead. We have a number of quality players compared with last year.

"Fiji has been doing a good job and they have been supporting us. I think this is a good place for this tournament.

"It will be a physical battle and to all the Tongan people here in Fiji, come and support us."

He said the Tonga A rugby team will be very clinical and physical against the Fiji Warriors on Friday.

Fatani said the Telecom Fiji Warriors would be a hard team to beat especially when playing against them on their home ground.

"We are well prepared for the game coming up on Friday and we know that Fiji is the best team in this tournament," Fatani said.

He is aware of Fiji's open style of rugby and had been analysing some of Fiji Warrior's previous games and working on ways to keep the Fijians contained.

"We are going to go physical and keep the game tight against the Fijians because we know it's always tough to play against Fiji on their home ground. I think they are more confident than us because they are playing at home, we are going to try our best," he said

Fatani said they had a combination of young and experienced players who played in last year's competition.

Tonga A and Fiji Warriors match will kick off at 5.30pm (local time) on Friday.

Meanwhile, Tongan players will wear a black armband as a sign of respect for the late Queen Mother, who died last month, aged 90.
