Tongan Thor banned for headbutt on Liam Messam at the Brisbane Tens

Taniela Tupou, the "Tongan Thor", has been banned for two weeks for headbutting Chiefs enforcer Liam Messam.

The incident happened in a high charged moment at the Brisbane Tens where Tupou was playing for the Queensland Reds.

Tupou was cited and suspended as the former New Zealand schoolboys star literally came head to head with some tough senior competition from his old homeland.

In a statement released by organisers late on Sunday, judicial officer Chris Newton accepted a guilty plea from the young Tupou for contravening Law 10.4 (a): Striking with the head.

"Tupou has been suspended from all forms of the game for two weeks up to and including Saturday, February 25, 2017.

"The judicial officer determined the event was a red card event. Tupou accepted a head contact occurred.

"The decision was a lower entry level (four weeks), discounted 50% for an unblemished playing record and extenuating circumstances in the incident, hence two weeks."

Not unexpectedly Messam held his own in a clash of the titans.

Tupou, who was signed by the Queensland Reds in 2014 on the back of a video of him bulldozing Auckland high school rugby players, ran straight at Messam on the first play of the Reds' quarter-final against the Chiefs.

Off a five-metre run up he charged towards the 108-kilogram Messam, who dropped his shoulder into the 135kg prop.

The impact was remarkable, but both players amazingly managed to hold their feet.

Tupou stepped into touch, but Messam came back at him with a swinging arm and a melee ensued during which Tupou hit Messam with a cheeky headbutt.

The match was initially expected to be Messam's last of the Tens following the death of his good friend Sione Lauaki.

Lauaki loved a big hit in his playing days for the Chiefs, so would have enjoyed this exchange.

Messam had the last laugh as Tupou was yellow-carded for a high tackle in the second half, as the Chiefs came from behind to win 12-10 and book a place in the semifinals.

The Chiefs went on to win the inaugural title, beating the Crusaders 12-7 in the final.
