Horn-Pacquiao rematch in doubt

The Queensland government has challenged Brisbane City Council to "get back in Jeff Horn's corner" and commit to funding a rematch with Filipino great Manny Pacquiao.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk says he wants confirmation from promoters that Pacquiao has signed for the fight before he commits to marketing the event.

"The Battle of Brisbane only happened with the strong financial support of Brisbane City Council," Quirk told News Corp.

"I need to know we definitely have a fighter coming from the Philippines to fight Brisbane's world champion Jeff Horn and I need to know that fighter is Manny Pacquiao.

"I'm not going to shadow box the fight promoters. I want some straight answers to the question is Manny in the boxing ring in Brisbane in November or is he in retirement?

"We don't know at this time and I'm withdrawing any financial support until Manny fronts up and tells us his intentions."

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Monday said she met with Horn and the fight's promoters over the weekend, and strongly believed the fight would go ahead.

She said it was important for all parties to get on board to ensure a second successful big-stage boxing event for the state's capital.

"Time is of the essence, and I don't think it's helping with the comments the lord mayor has made in relation to this rematch," Palaszczuk told reporters in Brisbane.

"So we're fighting hard to get it, we're in Jeff Horn's corner, and it's about time the lord mayor made it clear - is he supporting this rematch or is he not?"

It is believed the council spent more than $A1 million promoting the July fight where Horn won the world title in a controversial points decision.
