2019 Pacific Games host

Tahiti concerned about Pacific Games accommodation

A Memorandum of Agreement was signed in November between the Samoa Government and accommodation providers in Upolu and Savai'i.

But the majority of athletes will now base themselves at the Methodist Church of Samoa's Faleula compound for the July Games after officials were only able to convince 30 hotels to come on board, which will only cater for one quarter of the 4000 beds required.

The Vice President of Tahiti's Olympic Committee, Charles Villierme, said they have concerns the facilities will not enable athletes to perform to their best.

Tongan MPs table motion to host Pacific Games

Last month, 'Akilisi Pohiva pulled out of hosting the 2019 event, initially citing financial reasons but then saying his government had other priorities.

He remained steadfast in his stance even when the regional Pacific Games Council met with him to allay his concerns.

Now MPs Lord Nuku and Vili Hingano have tabled a parliamentary motion in the hope Mr Pohiva will change his mind, according to a report by RNZI.

Mr Hingano said it was also tabled for the government to explain its stance and give valid reasons.

Tongan government committed to hosting 2019 Pacific Games

A statement from the PM’s Office said it also reflected the overall level of readiness of the Kingdom of Tonga as a whole, including the Sporting Federations and the Athletes, to host the Pacific Games 2019.

The Government said Tonga would like to reaffirm its commitment to host the Pacific Games 2019.

Accordingly, the Government will continue to strengthen and double the effort that has already been in operation, within the resources available.
