Fiji COVID-19 patient dies from unrelated condition

However, the Health Ministry has clarified that the death is not COVID-related and is due to serious medical illness.

This is the second COVID-19 patient to have died from non-COVID-related causes.

The death of the first patient, a 38-year-old woman was confirmed over the weekend.

She was already ill due to other serious medical conditions for which she had been admitted to the hospital.

Police said the 57-year-old man, who had recovered from the coronavirus, had earlier travelled to India.

Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho said the man, referred to as 'Patient Number Nine', had been charged with one count of failure to comply with orders.

Police believed he travelled from Nadi Airport to a settlement in Suva where he stayed a few days before boarding a ferry to Labasa.

Police said during the alleged breach of quarantine, the man infected five of his family members.

Finau’s daughter and partner are ill.

“If any of you are feeling unwell, go and get tested,” she said.

“There is no shame in it.”

Kaniva News reports Finau, who is currently in Auckland, said she is concerned that people in the United States are travelling from state to state.

They were not facing the same strict restrictions as New Zealanders.

“I ask Americans to take it seriously,” she said.

“I wish I was home so I could do something for her.”
