‘It really woke parliament up’: King of Tonga criticises government handling of drugs crisis

King Tupou VI addressed Tongan parliament before the parliamentary session closed last week, urging politicians and nobles to commit time and money to dealing with the methamphetamine addiction crisis in the country.

Sioo Tu’iano says, drug is a major issue in Tonga and urges community and church leaders to work together with the offenders to ensure that they feel safe at all times.

He adds offenders need to feel they belong in the society where they can engage in community projects in order to minimize involvement in criminal activities.

TBC reports every week Police arrest and charge people with drugs and Tu’iano is concerned about how this issue is being addressed at a national level.

Drug problem a silent killer in territory says American Samoa official

Mauga told a Cabinet meeting that the flow and spread of drugs in the territory is a concern to himself and traditional leaders because it is affecting the youth.

He referred to the drug problem as a silent killer in the community and said if we avoid the issue or sweep it under the rug, the consequences will be serious.

Mauga said not a week goes by without an incident involving drugs being reported.

"Drug paraphernalia and military guns, we must resist the presences of these things in our lives," he said.
