Tonga announces large electricity tariff reduction

This follows the confirmation of a decrease in diesel prices from $1.5091 per litre in March 2020 to $1.0419 per litre in June 2020 (an accumulated reduction of $0.47 per litre or 32% reduction in total.

A recent release states that the accumulated price reduction from 15 March 2020 to 15 June is driven mainly by the ongoing and current economic impact of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

Pacific electricity costs under scrutiny

Pacific island countries have some of the highest electricity costs in the world, making power beyond the reach of many.

This is mainly due to high electricity tariffs, the high cost of service connections and the cost of wiring premises.

RNZI reports the conference will explore regulatory reforms, technology and innovative financing to make electricity more affordable.
