Jarryd Hayne sentenced to four years, nine months jail for sexual assault

ABC reports the former professional footballer will be eligible for parole in just under two years.

Judge Graham Turnbull told Sydney's Downing Court Hayne's offending was "below mid-range" and he had a "seemingly low risk of reoffending".

Hayne has faced three trials over the assault, with the first ending in a hung jury and the guilty verdict of the second quashed.

Today's sentence was lighter than his previous sentence of five years and nine months.

Halafihi sent to jail after downloading child porn while at work in Canada

Maka-I-Moana Eugene Mumui Halafihi, 30, was sentenced in North Vancouver Provincial Court after pleading guilty to two charges of possessing child pornography reports Kaniva News.

In handing down his sentence, Judge Joseph Galati outlined how on 20 April 2020, Halafihi arranged to meet another man he’d met online for the purpose of using crystal methamphetamine and watching pornography together while taking part in sexual activities.

During their encounter, Halafihi accessed 20 to 30 digital file folders on his computer, each containing a number of short videos.

Fruit picker told to expect jail after being filmed beating cat to death

Max Loketi, 28, was working on a farming property at Hamel, south of Perth, in March when he picked up the small black cat and repeatedly hit it with a two-metre pole.

The footage of the attack, which was played in the Perth Magistrates Court, showed Loketi first holding the animal by the tail and then hitting it again when it was on the floor, barely moving.

'I don't have sympathy for Manu Vatuvei' - Fauono Ken Laban

Rugby league commentator Fauono Ken Laban has condemned the actions of former league star Manu Vatuvei, but says part of the responsibility lies with his management team.

Vatuvei was sentenced to three years and seven months earlier this week in Manukau District Court for importing methamphetamine.

"You've got to find the people who failed Manu," says Fauono Ken Laban.

New Zealander jailed in US for producing child pornography

Aucklander Troy George Skinner made headlines when he travelled to the US state of Virginia to meet a teenage girl he had chatted to online.

The girl's mother shot him in the neck as he was trying to smash his way into their home on 22 June, 2018.

Skinner fled from the house but collapsed in a neighbour's yard, where he was caught by members of the local Goochland County sheriff's office.

A local newspaper, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, reported Skinner created 49 videos around sexual acts that he had persuaded the 14-year-old to perform online.

 

Fiji govt official stands firm on comments regarding Grace Road

Shin Ok-ju was jailed for six years for enslaving hundreds of followers in Fiji, and forcing them to work in cult-run businesses.

In the wake of the sentencing, opposition leader Sitiveni Rabuka called for the permanent secretary of the Office of the Prime Minister, Yogesh Karan, to resign for saying it didn't need to be investigated.

Mr Karan said he stands by his August statement, because none of the cult members in Fiji had breached their visa conditions.

He also accused the government of turning a blind eye to Grace Road to preserve business links.

Elderly woman given 10-day jail sentence for feeding stray cats

Since 2015, neighbours of Nancy Segula have been complaining to officials about the strays. She claims the cats were left behind by an ex-neighbour.

"I'm a cat lover," she told Fox 8 in Cleveland, after learning of her coming term in the Cuyahoga County Jail.

Mrs Segula has been ordered by a judge to begin her sentence on 11 August.

She has been cited by police four times over the past four years, after her neighbours began complaining of the swarm of cats on her property.
