Teenager charged over New York NYE machete attack

Trevor Bickford - who was also charged with two counts of attempted assault - travelled to NYC by train from Maine before the attack, police said.

US media reported his family recently told the FBI they feared he was being radicalised by Islamist extremists.

Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said the attack was "unprovoked".

The three officers - one of whom suffered a fractured skull after being struck by the machete - were all released from hospital on Sunday.

Tongatapu machete attacker sentenced to seven years imprisonment

Kaumavae Fakaanga, 35, pleaded not guilty to one count of causing grievous bodily harm but later changed his plea to guilty.

Kaniva News reports Fakaanga’s charge stemmed from an incident in which Fakaanga attacked Sosefo Tu’akoi, 44, with a machete.

Tu’akoi’s left hand was injured during the attack and was later amputated.

Tonga Police Officer in machete attack

The 36-year old officer sustained head injuries when the suspect allegedly hit him on the head with a machete.   

Police had received a report last Thursday night that a man jumped over a fence at a house and was trying to break into the building.

The officer was hit while trying to arrest the suspect.

He was rushed to Vaiola Hospital where he is reported to be in a stable condition.

Other officers arrested the suspect and he remains in custody to appear in court.

Young woman attacked and killed in Tonga in wake of Gita

Matangi Tonga reports an 18-year-old man has been charged with the murder of an 18-year-old woman.

It's alleged he assaulted her with a machete on a road in Nuku'alofa the day after Cyclone Gita hit the capital.

The website reports police said the accused and deceased were in a relationship and had one child together.

The accused was allegedly intoxicated when he saw the victim walking with other people after swimming at a public pool on Vuna Road at Ma'ufanga.

A police spokesperson said the woman died on the spot.

Sione Vaitai charged after attacking father, sister with machete

Sione Fono Vaitai, 26 of Sandy, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of obstructing justice, three counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child, and for one count related to fleeing from police.

Fox13 News reports the charges stem from an incident on May 12 in Sandy. Charging documents citing statements from family members say Vaitai entered his sisters’ room holding a machete and told the girls, ages 13 and 14, to be quiet or they would die.

Son injures father in machete attack in Tonga

Radio Tonga reports the 60 year old father suffered wound to his head, neck and legs in the attack.

Superintendent of the Nuku’alofa Police Station, Tevita Vailea said, the incident happened at their home on Saturday morning.

Another son was injured in the attack.

Vailea said the 26 year old man has a history with the Psychology Department in Vaiola.

His is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in Court later this week.

She was being treated at Vaiola hospital.

Kaniva News has attempted to reach those involved and Ministry of Health authority for comment and has not heard back.

Two weeks ago in Nukuʻalofa, bar bouncers and a non-uniform Police officer had fought off a machete-wielding man outside a bar shortly after a fight broke out in the bar.

Meanwhile four men accused in relation to the death of ʻAiveni Teisina, 36,  were in court after a machete attack in a parking lot in Vaini on October 23.
