Drug suspect to appear in Tonga court

The suspect was arrested a week ago.

Police said the suspect went to fill-up his car at a petrol station in the Central Business District.

The accused did not have any cash to pay for the petrol so the workers reported the matter to police.

Police officers reached the service station, searched his car and found 2 small packets allegedly containing methamphetamine.

He was arrested and he has been charged with possession of illicit drug.

The continuing Police investigation is expected to confirm the amount of methamphetamine seized.

Meth use in NZ still above global average

That's despite 22 percent more convictions for meth-related offences over the same period.

The government launched an action plan in 2009 and made the meth-precursor pseudoephedrine a prescription-only medicine in an attempt to reduce the prevalence of meth.

Methamphetamine parcel intercepted in Fiji

The illicit drug was concealed in a shampoo bottle which was sent from the United States and addressed to a local woman.

The suspect fled when questioned by Customs Officers upon collecting the parcel.

She was later identified through her Tax Identification Number (TIN).

The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority’s intelligence team was informed of the drugs earlier this month.
