New Tongan kindergarten opens in Auckland suburb

This is the first dedicated Tongan centre in the Auckland Kindergarten Association’s 115-year history, and was designed in collaboration with the local Tongan community reports PMN News. 

AKA Chief Executive Pauline Winter says the community's wish was for every child at the kindergarten to have their identity strengthened, and receive a foundation for lifelong learning, which is reflected in the name. 

“Fonua is about the connection of people, land and beginnings and is also the Tongan word for placenta.

Kaniva News reports the Ōtāhuhu Crime Prevention Facebook community page had posted several photos from the scene early this morning.

The photos triggered a public outcry with many describing it as “embarrassing” and “filthy”.

Some commenters on the posts accused some of the Mate Ma’a Tonga supporters saying people have to learn how to celebrate and keep the environments clean.

However, some patriotic Tongans and die hard Mate Ma’a Tonga supporters quickly jumped into action and a clean-up operation started.

Two Tongan men lose name suppression in Auckland murder case

Sosaia Vaitohi, 26, and Metthuselak Talakai, 28, appeared briefly in the High Court at Auckland yesterday.

The New Zealand Herald reports name suppression for both of them lapsed yesterday.

Talakai's next appearance will be a callover on June 30 and Vaitohi will have a case review of August 18.

Both men were remanded in custody.

Defence counsel Emma Priest said both had requested to attend their upcoming hearings in person.

Moala was 31, was married and had three children, his father told the Herald last month.

NZ Police identify fatal victim shooting as Alec Moala

A post-mortem was completed and Police said they are continuing to make a number of enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding his death, including speaking to several people in Beatty Street and the wider Ōtāhuhu area.

Police said they have also received a number of calls from members of the public since their appeal for information and want to thank those who came forward with information.

This information is being assessed as part of ongoing enquiries.

Tongan man gunned down in New Zealand

Police say about 4.40am Saturday, they were called to a report of a shooting in Seaside Park.

Ambulance and Police located the victim, Samiuela Anania Tupou, who was critically injured and died at the scene.

Samiuela, 21, recently returned with his family to live in New Zealand from the United States.

Family and friends describe him as a fun-loving, hard-working young man who regularly attended church and enjoyed social occasions with his friends and family.

Tongan rugby league supporters arrested in brawl

Groups of supporters of both rival nations were out in force in the suburb of Otahuhu during the Rugby League World Cup, and when they clashed the fight was captured on video. 

It shows two groups brawling in the middle of the road as cars drive past honking their horns. 

Police confirmed the incident on Tuesday night and said the four people arrested were Tongan supporters. 

Counties Manukau West Area Commander Inspector Naila Hassan urged fans to behave responsibly.
