PNG delegation in Tonga to assess Pacific Games prep

The construction of venues in Nuku'alofa remains behind schedule, while the government is also struggling to find the funds required to pay for the upgrades.

PNG agreed to help Tonga after a party led by Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva visited Port Moresby last month.

PNG Sports Minister Tkatchenko on fact finding mission to Tonga

The main aim of the trip is to assesses the Pacific Kingdom’s sporting infrastructure and come up with an estimate monetary figure that Papua New Guinea Government will give to Tonga in its preparation to host the 2019 Pacific Games. 

Tkatchenko told Loop PNG, that engineers and architectures from the Department of Works and PNG Sports Foundation CEO  Peter Tsiamalili Jnr will be accompanying him for the four-day trip.

“We will come back with a decision because it is a fact finding trip.

PM Pohiva and Lord Sevele at odds over hosting Pacific Games

Confusion over who was responsible for the organisation of the 2019 Pacific Games, arose after well-publicised verbal exchanges between the Prime Minister, ‘Akilisi Pohiva and Lord Sevele.

Recently the Prime Minister made an official visit to Papua New Guinea “to further strengthen the economic and social cooperation between the two countries in the sports arena.” But it raised questions over who is organising the games.
