Key activities will include employing FIFA Legends to raise climate change awareness and adapting existing infrastructure in one of the world’s most vulnerable regions to make it more climate proof.

Pacific Islands Forum donates to Tonga’s recovery efforts

Hu’akavameiliku accepted a total of FJD$38,000 from the Forum Secretary General Henry Puna in a special zoom call from Suva, Fiji, as part of the “Blue Pacific Tonga Appeal”.

The funds were raised by the Secretariat through salary deductions, direct deposits, walkathon and bikeathons, involving the staff of the Secretariat staff, staff of the Pacific Aviation Safety Office and the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency.

Speaking from the Cook Islands, Secretary General Dame Meg Taylor said “I am very proud that a daughter of the Blue Pacific has been appointed Director General. The Forum Fisheries Agency plays an extremely important leadership role for our fisheries, one of the most important resources for our people.”

Pacific called on to focus its collective energies

Dame Meg Taylor, speaking just ahead of the leaders' summit in Apia, says the Pacific faces significant challenges to realising its political and development ambitions.

She said the current context of global, political, economic and environmental uncertainty exacerbated this.

Dame Meg said, for instance, there was a huge gap in terms of the financing needed for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Forum China visit a success - trade commissioner

That's the view of the Forum's trade commissioner to China, David Morris, who was on a Forum trip to China last month.

The Forum delegation was led by secretary general Dame Meg Taylor, who said they wanted to develop a deeper and more dynamic relationship.

Mr Morris said they met with key officials, particularly in Guangzhou which had links with the Pacific going back more than 100 years.

He said better links with China were fundamentally important for the Pacific.

The PIFS Non-state Actors (NSA) Programme Unit is coordinating a Regional Civil Society Forum that will be held in the lead up to the event.  Ideas generated during the forum will be presented to Troika Leaders, i.e. the past (RMI), current (Palau) and future chair (PNG) of the Pacific Islands Forum. U.S and Pacific explore platform for economic development engagement

The two day meeting at the Fijian Hotel on Yanuca Island will among other things explore how Pacific exporters can take advantage of the U.S Generalised System of Preferences (GSP).

Forum presented with five priority issues

The issues were identified by the recently created Specialist Sub-Committee on Regionalism and have been presented to the Forum Officials Committee meeting in Suva.

In May the Sub-Committee called for public proposals and received 68 proposals.

Dame Meg Taylor says the issues raised reflected community expectations of the role Forum leaders could play.

The five issues are increased economic returns from fisheries and maritime surveillance; climate change and disaster risk management; information and communication technology; West Papua and cervical cancer.

K500m funding deal between Pacific and Europe

The Pacific RIP amounts to EUR 166 million or more than  K500 million.

The Pacific RIP will benefit the 15 Pacific ACP countries (Cook Islands, Timor- Leste, Fiji, Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu).
