Perth's Lord Mayor pushes for 2026 Commonwealth Games bid

With more than 61,000 people in attendance for the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final at Optus Stadium this weekend, Zempilas said the Western Australia capital could now step up and position itself as a “big events city” by taking on responsibility for hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

"The 2026 Commonwealth Games is available, there is no host city for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, it’s there, it’s available," Zempilas told 9News.

“If we put our hand up in a meaningful and decisive manner, we can win the Commonwealth Games.

All Blacks banish Perth demons

They have beaten Australia 38-21 after leading 18-0 at halftime to move atop the Rugby Championship standings after two of six rounds.

The All Blacks completed the sweep without new captain Ardie Savea, who along with hooker Codie Taylor was unable to play any part in the second-half after they failed head injury assessments at halftime.

The Wallabies won 47-26 the last time the two sides met in Perth, where lock Scott Barrett was red carded.

Australians confident Perth will host rescheduled All Blacks clash

The third meeting of the series between the teams - which also doubles up as the countries' second clash in this year's Rugby Championship - was scheduled to be played in West Australia on August 28.

But after a decision on Friday by New Zealand Rugby to pull out of the game sparked a war of words between the nations' rugby officials, Marinos is confident the match can still happen on a later date.

"We're working hard now with the West Australian government and the stadium to see if we can't move that to September 4," Marinos told Channel Nine on Sunday.

All Blacks abandon Bledisloe Cup trip to Australia

With the country amid a COVID-19 lockdown and Australia having restrictions around New Zealanders travelling there, the NZR has decided not to send the team which was due to leave for Perth on Sunday and play the Wallabies there on Saturday week.

NZR has also announced the All Blacks' two home rugby championship against South Africa and the Black Ferns two O'Reilly Cup Tests against the Wallaroos will not be played in New Zealand.

The match in Dunedin would have been the 100th test between the All Blacks and the Springboks.

Rugby Australia hopeful of Perth Bledisloe

But plans for the four-team Rugby Championship, also including world champions South Africa and Argentina, being played solely in Perth look to have been knocked on the head.

The Bledisloe match is scheduled for Optus Stadium on August 28, however doubts surfaced with the All Blacks caught up in New Zealand’s snap lockdown on Tuesday.

Following the outbreak the West Australian government changed the border arrangements so all arrivals from New Zealand must quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

Ex Wallabies confident Perth Bledisloe will be played

The All Blacks are due to leave for Perth on Sunday, but anyone arriving in Australia from New Zealand must now self isolate for 14 days.

The Australian government has paused "green zone" flights from New Zealand due to the country's level four lockdown and growing number of community covid cases.

That means anyone flying from Aotearoa to Australia will now need to undergo two weeks in hotel quarantine.

The travel pause is currently scheduled to end on August 24, but it could be extended, with the Australian government reviewing it on Friday.

End of Perth Covid-19 lockdown 'too early to predict

“Right now, it’s too early to predict what will happen come Tuesday,” Mark McGowan said at a press conference on Sunday.

While Perth is in lockdown, travel between New Zealand and Western Australia remains on hold. There has been no indication from the Government or airlines on when flights will resume.

Health advice around the Covid-19 situation in Perth is due on Monday, but McGowan warned some public safety measures may remain even if lockdown ends.

Sydney Bledisloe unlikely with Perth frontrunner to host All Blacks in 2021

While there is a lot of water to go under the bridge before the international calendar kicks off in July, rugby officials are desperate to ensure the Wallabies feature in more than 2020′s tally of six tests.

Australia squared off against the Kiwis in four consecutive tests last year. Michael Hooper’s men drew the first test in Wellington, fell in Auckland and Sydney to ultimately squander the Bledisloe Cup, before salvaging some pride in Brisbane with a 24-22 victory.

Perth may have more chance of joining Super League than the NRL

After beating the NRL to the punch by playing a premiership fixture on the other side of the world, English officials have revealed there had been discussions about a Perth team joining the likes of Toronto, New York, London and Toulouse in an expanded Super League.

"We've got New York and a number of other areas very interested and there are whispers from Perth that they are interested because there is a direct flight now into London," Wigan owner Ian Lenagan said.
