Ronaldo not among Portugal recalls

Juventus star Ronaldo has not appeared at international level since the World Cup.

Reports suggested he could return to face Italy and Poland, but Santos has honoured the joint decision not to consider the forward until 2019.

"The only thing I think about Ronaldo is that he should win the Ballon d'Or," Santos replied when asked about Portugal's all-time top scorer.

There are recalls for defenders Jose Fonte and Raphael Guerreiro, along with midfield pair Andre Gomes and Joao Mario.

Iran 1 Portugal 1

The usually prolific Ronaldo was off target with a 53rd-minute penalty, awarded after a video-assisted review, as Portugal failed to build on Ricardo Quaresma's first-half stunner in the crucial Group B contest.

That miss from Ronaldo, who was perhaps fortunate not to see red for another VAR check after swinging an arm into the face of Morteza Pouraliganji, was punished when Cedric Soares was pinged for handball after referee Enrique Caceres again went to his video monitor.

Portugal 3 Spain 3

Spain led with three minutes to go after Nacho Fernandez hit a wonderful 25-yard drive but Ronaldo was determined to steal the headlines for himself.

And he ended the day with a World Cup match-ball after hitting an outrageous late free-kick to ensure the spoils were shared in this blockbuster clash in Sochi.

Captain Ronaldo had given Portugal a fourth-minute lead from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Madrid team-mate Nacho, restoring the lead thanks to David de Gea's horrible mistake.

Portugal wildfires kill dozens

Portugal, still recovering from its deadliest forest fire on record in June, bore the brunt of the latest death toll - 32, with the possibility of rising further, according to the authorities.

Authorities said they were still battling 145 blazes in Portugal while another 100 fires were raging in Spainish region Galicia.

The weekend's fires had also injured 56 people in Portugal, civil protection service spokeswoman Patricia Gaspar said. The toll could still increase as seven people were unaccounted for.

Chile ready for Ronaldo – Pizzi

The Portugal captain scored twice and registered one assist in three group games at the Confederations Cup to help his side reach the semi-finals.

The European champions will play Chile in the last four in what will be their second match at Kazan Arena, after the Copa America holders finished second in Group B behind Germany.

Pizzi believes Ronaldo can only be a danger when Portugal are playing well as a united team but he has faith his own players know how to handle him.

Ronaldo skips questions following Portugal victory

The 32-year-old netted the only goal of the game to help the European champions to victory in Moscow, beating goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev from close range early on.

As man of the match, he was due to appear in front of the press, but Ronaldo was in no mood to take any questions amid ongoing uncertainty about his future at Madrid and stuck to a few prepared words on Portugal's win.

"Obviously we are very happy, it is the first time that Portugal wins in Russia," he stated.

Forest fires kill 19 in central Portugal

The fire, which started yesterday, is still burning out of control and is already one of the deadliest in Portugal in decades.

It hit the mountainous area of Pedrogao Grande, 200km south-east of Lisbon, amid an intense heat wave fanned by strong winds.

Twenty people have been injured, including six firefighters, and two people are missing.

It is not yet known what caused the fire, which has also burnt down houses in the area.

200 million-year-old croc egg fossils found

They are so well preserved that they give an insight into the "mother croc" that laid them 152 million years ago.

The prehistoric crocodile ancestor would have spanned 2 metres, based on the size of the larger eggs, say palaeontologists.

Crocodiles arose some 200 million years ago, when they prowled the land with early dinosaurs.

Today, they are found throughout the world and are successful predators.

Portugal father of democracy Mario Soares dies aged 92

Mr Soares was prime minister between 1976 and 1978, in the aftermath of the Carnation Revolution that ended decades of right-wing dictatorship.

A Socialist, he returned as PM in the early 1980s and served as president between 1986 and 1996.

He had been admitted to hospital in Lisbon last month following a "general worsening of his health", doctors said.

He had shown signs of improvement, but later fell into a deep coma from which he never recovered. The hospital, however, has not revealed the exact cause of death.

Nani: We can cope without Ronaldo

The Real Madrid forward has not played since hobbling out of Portugal's Euro 2016 final triumph against France, and young midfielder Renato Sanches was also absent for this friendly.

However, after scoring twice himself, Nani insisted he and his team mates have again shown they can still perform when their star men are missing.

"I am very pleased with the team performance," he said. "I think we did a good job but we are aware that the next game [a World Cup qualifier against Switzerland] will be much more difficult and certainly we will have to give much more.
