Lomu died suddenly last November, aged 40, after suffering for many years from a chronic and serious kidney disorder.

He had just returned from the hectic speaking and publicity tour that coincided with the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Toloa tried their best to put on a strong performance at Teufaiva Park in Nuku’alofa yesterday afternoon.

However, Marist was determined to avenge their loss to Toloa in pool play and did just that.

Marist Team Manager Tafu Wolfgram admitted it was not easy beating Toloa.

 “It was a tough game but the players just stuck it out and played to what we had planned.”

The semi-finals for the premier division have ended and the winning teams will now progress to the finals at Teufaiva Park on Saturday.

Marist will face-off with Spartans.

Lavengamalie Cup moves to semi finals

The tournament kicked off on 12 December, 2015 with more than 10 teams from different districts and clubs in Tongatapu.

The second division semi-finalists Malapo will take on Popua while Fatumu will meet Nukunuku today.

Toa ko Ma‘afu Saracen will take on Spartan and Marist will challenge Toloa Old Boys in the first division semi-finals tomorrow.

The finals for both the divisions are expected to be held on Saturday, 9 January.

Tonga Rugby Union to advertise for new coach

The former 'Ikale Tahi loose forward has coached Tonga to 11 wins in 24 tests since his appointment in 2012.

But Tonga disappointed at the recent World Cup, winning just one pool match and missing out on the knockout rounds and automatic qualification for the 2019 tournament.

The newly installed interim chair and president of the Tonga Rugby Union, Fe'ao Vunipola, says Mana Otai spent 20-odd years playing and coaching in New Zealand, prior to his appointment, and didn't give local players much of a look-in.
