Tonga call up new faces for Test against New Zealand

Woolf has named a 22-man squad of players mainly from the NRL, with Tonga’s 2017 World Cup halfback Tuimoala Lolohea in line to travel from English Super League club Leeds to play in the historic Test at Mt Smart Stadium.

Cowboys utility John Asiata, Manly hooker Manase Fainu, Broncos centre Kotoni Staggs, Titans prop Moeaki Fotuaika and Roosters forward Sitili Tupouniua are the uncapped players in the squad.

World Cup representatives Mahe Fonua (foot) and Ata Hingano (thumb) were in the preliminary squad but are unavailable due to injury.

The grant will also help improve the country’s business climate with policy, regulatory, and public enterprise reforms.

“The Building Macroeconomic Resilience Program for Tonga has shown that budget support can achieve results if there is strong government ownership,” said ADB Principal Economist for the Pacific Ms. Ananya Basu. “A coordinated approach across development partners is key to the program’s success to date.”

NZ science showcase on climate heads to Tonga

The museum's Craig Grant said the Far From Frozen exhibition would be taken to schools with the aim of explaining some of the science behind climate change and its effects in the islands.

Dr Grant said topics covered would include sea-level rise, extreme weather events and the bleaching of coral reefs.

"Getting them to understand things like fossil fuels being burned and the Co2 going into the atmosphere," he said.

"And a lot of it goes into the ocean and that can make the ocean more acidic.

Fiji Residents beat Tonga in Tri Series

Fiji scored the first try of the match in the fourth minute through Penioni Tagitumua to give them the 6-0 lead.

Tonga came back with two tries and led at halftime 10-6.

Captain Pio Seci managed to break the Tongan’s defence to score Fiji’s second try before Michael Peters sealed the victory with another try.

     

Tongatapu car crash claims young man's life

According to Kaniva News, Police attended to the crash on Taufa’āhau Rd.

Photos on social media, showed a vehicle lying upside down outside some stores and authorities responding to the scene.

Other details of the accident are still sketchy.

Mate Ma'a Tonga 2.0: Next generation of league stars making their mark

The Kingdom will face New Zealand in the opening round of the Oceania Cup in Auckland later this month, in a much-awaited rematch of their famous victory over the Kiwis at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

Brisbane Broncos star Tevita Pangai Junior joined the likes of Andrew Fifita, Jason Taumalolo and Sio Siua Taukeiaho last month in committing his international future to Tonga, after turning down the chance to play State of Origin.

Friends from 3/11 disaster helping woman improve toilets in Tonga

Lui, 40, soon began efforts to improve school toilet facilities in the Vava’u island group in this island country in the South Pacific, some 7,800 kilometers from her homeland.

Lui's goal is for “an environment where children can study without any anxiety.”

Touring all of about 30 schools on the islands with a total population of 15,000, she is working to improve their aging restrooms and water supply systems that have not been properly maintained due to a lack of funds.

Tonga PM back in NZ for medical care

'Akilisi Pohiva was in Auckland last month before returning to Tonga briefly.

The prime minister told local media he's been advised by his doctor to avoid any intensive mental activity.

The cause of Mr Pohiva's ill-health has not been revealed.

Meanwhile Matangi Tonga reports Mr Pohiva saying King Tupou VI was right to say, during the opening of parliament last week, that the government has no vision for economic development.

Mr Pohiva says his government has failed to spell out its plan clearly.

Museum staff taking climate change exhibition to Tonga

Museum visitor experience and science engagement director Dr Craig Grant said the museum's popular "Far From Frozen" exhibition would feature in the educational trip to schools in Tonga, and later in Fiji and Samoa.

He was "really excited" about the latest initiative, which also involved three University of Otago staff, and was backed by a $27,500 Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade grant to help with transport costs.

This follows a successful "Far From Frozen" showcase visit to schools on Niue and the Cook Islands last year.

Athletes, officials, spectators, volunteers, and the workforce involved in the Games are reminded that the event is smokefree.

May 31, which is just 37 days until the Opening Ceremony kicks off a fortnight of sporting competition, is the annual No Tobacco Day organised by the World Health Organization.

The annual campaign raises awareness of the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, and aims to discourage the use of tobacco in any form.
