Wellington Phoenix

Wellington Phoenix coaching staff diagnosed with coronavirus

The club has confirmed the news, although they have not announced which coach has contracted the virus.

The announcement came just a few hours after the Newcastle Jets, who also play in the A-League competition, confirmed one of their players has also tested positive for Covid-19.

"The club is cooperating fully with all the relevant health authorities, and is focussed on supporting staff, as well as ensuring that all government protocols are being closely adhered to," they said.

Johnny Warren Medal winner Roy Krishna to depart Wellington Phoenix

Star striker Roy Krishna, the winner of both the Johnny Warren Medal and Golden Boot, will on Monday afternoon confirm his exit from the club after five and a half seasons, but his next destination remains unclear.

Wellington's all-time leading scorer has been courted by numerous A-League clubs on the back of his career-high 19-goal haul, with champions Sydney FC and Melbourne City chasing hard for his signature during the latter stages of the campaign.

Wellington Phoenix's Roy Krishna adds Johnny Warren Medal to A-League Golden Boot

The Wellington Phoenix striker has capped off a career-best season by winning the Johnny Warren Medal, the honour for the competition's best player.

He was the third Phoenix player to take out the prestigious award after Shane Smeltz in 2008-09 and Nathan Burns in 2014-15.

Krishna also took out the league's Golden Boot with 18 goals this season, breaking Jeremy Brockie's club record for most goals in a season in the process.

The 31-year-old Fijian international is off-contract and attracting interest from around the league for a big-money marquee deal.

Phoenix go down to Adelaide United

The result moves Adelaide level with the Phoenix in fourth place, with three regular season matches remaining.

The home side enjoyed an explosive first half, racing to a 3-0 lead before going down to 10-men.

Phoenix open season with 1-0 loss

But despite the defeat, Coach Ernie Merrick still found plenty to be upbeat about.

With four players on All Whites duty and another sidelined through injury, the Phoenix were always going to struggle against A-League high-fliers Melbourne City.

After a less than impressive first half from the home side, it was City that went into the halftime break with the lead thanks to an Anthony Caceres goal.
