19 arrested in Tonga Police drug bust

A sting by the Tonga Police Drug taskforce has led to the arrest of 19 people for various alleged criminal offences.

Ten people including a woman were arrested on Friday after police seized cannabis, ammunition and cash in a raid.

On Saturday, seven men were arrested after police found cannabis, ammunition and cash in another raid.

A 40-year-old-man of Lapaha was arrested at Ngele’ia on Sunday after he was allegedly found with 21 packs of methamphetamine

Police also arrested a 32-year-old-man of Vaini on the same day after he was allegedly found with cannabis.

All the suspects are in police custody while investigations continue.

Deputy Commissioner Pelenatita Vaisuai says that Police are committed to disrupting and detecting the supply of drugs and holding those responsible to account.

 “We encourage anyone who may have information about drug related offending to contact their nearest Police station, or ring 23417 or 922,” Vaisuai said.

The Police Drug Enforcement Taskforce operation was supported by the Tactical Response Group (TRG) and the Dog Unit.

The taskforce was launched in April 2018 and a total of 211 arrests have been made to date.
