Cable ship arrives in Tonga to repair damaged submarine cable

Tonga government officials welcomed crew members of a ship that will carry out repairs to a submarine cable.

The cable repair ship arrived at Queen Salote Wharf in Nuku’alofa Monday evening.

The Department of Communications in the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs collaborated to provide diplomatic clearance for the ship.

The Department of Communications is the policy institution and regulator for Tonga’s communications sector.

A statement said there is no time-frame for the restoration period but it is understood that the duration of the repair will depend on the extent of the problem.

Latest reports show that the current internet connection is improving. Communications service providers are continuously working to increase the satellite capacity as well as connecting services and offices to the internet.

Ability to make international and domestic calls have been restored.

The Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Standing Committee of Tonga’s Parliament met with communications stakeholders’ Monday afternoon to update the progress of the work carried out to restore internet connection to essential services through satellite.
