Fiji helps cyclone-ravaged Tonga

Fiji is making her mark by helping provide vital relief supplies to people whose lives have been devastated by Tropical Cyclone Gita in Tonga.

A Fiji Airways 737 aircraft left Nadi this morning with much-needed technical and emergency supplies. The supplies have been cleared in Nuku’alofa and will be ready for distribution by Digicel and relief agency personnel later today.

Digicel CEO Pacific, Colin Stone said, “The terrible effects of Tropical Cyclone Gita in Tonga are now clear and many people are in urgent need of assistance like water, shelter and food”.

“We have put together relief packs with basic food rations and supplies. In addition, family size tents, tarpaulins, hardware materials, first aid kits and cartons of Fiji Water were included on the flight today. These supplies will help to provide for much needed items for the most vulnerable people affected by the cyclone”.

“The plane was also laden with technical equipment for repairs of the network. Technical teams and Huawei are now on the ground and are working tirelessly to restore Digicel communication throughout the Kingdom”.

With vast experience in disaster recovery, Fiji is ideally placed to provide assistance to our Pacific neighbours Samoa and Tonga during this trying time. Currently Digicel is assessing the assistance required in Southern Fiji, which was also impacted by Tropical Cyclone Gita this week.

Digicel is thankful to Air Terminal Services, Fiji Airways, Fiji Water and the Fiji Government for their assistance in the gathering and freight of relief supplies to Nuku’alofa this morning.
