Good Samaritan killed while helping a woman

A woman run over and killed while coming to the aid of another woman who was being attacked was Sagaia Kaisala.

Kaisala, a mother of two, died at the scene after trying to help a woman who was being attacked by a man in south Auckland, said a Givealittle page set up by Kaisala's sister-in-law Aroma Faafuata.

Faafuata said the death "sent shock waves through our family" and Kaisala's husband would have to "rethink and change his living situation all because of a selfish man's actions".

The incident happened on Mahunga Drive, in Māngere Bridge, on Thursday.

A witness at the scene described the incident as "chaos".

Members of Kaisala's family on Wednesday declined to comment, but Faafuata said on the Givealittle page that her family's "hearts ached as we received the news that our beloved sister-in-law had died".

"Nobody has the right to take someone else's parents and partner from them."

She said funds from the Givealittle page would be used to help Kaisala's husband and children stay financially afloat as they adjusted to life on a single income.

Kaisala had just finished work when she and a male colleague noticed the assault taking place. A man stabbed a woman with a knife before jumping into his car then ramming Kaisala and her colleague.

The stabbed woman and Kaisala's colleague were taken to Middlemore Hospital; both have since been discharged.

A 46-year-old man was arrested and appeared in Manukau District Court court on Friday, charged with attempting to murder the stabbed woman.

The accused and the woman he was charged with attempting to murder both have interim name suppression.
