NZ has its first Pacific Minister for Social Development

New Zealand has appointed its first Pacific Minister for Social Development, Labour MP for Kelston Carmel Sepuloni.

Sepuloni also picked up Minister for Disability Issues, Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage and Associate Minister for Pacific Peoples.

Of Tongan-Samoan descent, Sepuloni says she's humbled to have been selected as a Cabinet Minister and they're ready to lead the country.

"For those of us that have run for the last three or four elections, we really do know what's involved and we've had lots of time to think about what policy we think can address the challenges that we face as a country," she says.

"We're ready to implement that now that we've been given that opportunity."

She's one of two Pacific women to be appointed as Ministers inside of Cabinet.

Sepuloni won the Kelston electorate by a huge lead in the recent elections and says after nine years in opposition, they've got a lot of work to do.

"Almost immediately you can expect the work to come in... There'll be lots of discussions with senior officials to talk about what our agenda is in terms of our policy manifesto, how we're going to roll that out, how we're going to make that happen."

Sepuloni says she's been overwhelmed with the support from the Pacific community but knows the role comes with huge responsibilities.

"There's huge expectations. There'll be some criticism but there's also a lot of support for the job that we're seeking to do and we expect to do the best job that we can do," she says.

"None of us are superhuman and none of us are perfect but we have to be committed to working hard, committed to making that difference that we said we wanted to make during the election campaign."
