Power supply restored to more than 53 per cent in Tongatapu

Electricity has been restored to 53 per cent of the people on Tonga’s main island, Tongatapu after Cyclone Gita.

This was confirmed by the Operation Manager of Tonga Power Limited, Setitaia Chen.

He says, power restoration to all the homes in Tongatapu is expected to be completed in five weeks from the day the cyclone made landfall in the Kingdom.

He adds power restoration in ‘Eua have been completed and TPL staff are only focussing on the main island.

“We had seen progress in our work but at the same time we have to be careful because it can be risky,” says Chen.

Chen says, linesmen from Australia and New Zealand have arrived in the Kingdom to assist their staff in power restoration.

The second linesmen’s team from Australia is expected to arrive in Tonga next week.
