Successful completion of Tonga Domestic Cable System

Tonga Cable Ltd (TCL) will offer domestic capacity leasing starting in April 2018 after the successful completion of the submarine fibre optic cable system to the Ha’apai and Vava’u Group of islands.

The estimated cost of this project was around US$8.3 million which was partially funded from the proceeds of the sale of Government’s shares to Digicel Tonga Limited (DTL) for US$4.2 million and partially from the World Bank (WB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The project was successfully completed under the estimated budget.

As of Tuesday 20 March, the system was officially turned over to the control of TCL after the signing of the certificate of completion.

The official commissioning was held on the 27th in Ha’apai and the 28th in Vava’u with Prime Minister, Akilisi Pohiva as guest of honour.

The launch was attended by Cabinet Ministers, Tonga Cable Limited, TCC and Digicel.  Representing Digicel Tonga was Dennis Fuapau, Head of Business Solutions and Ragigia Dawai, Manager Consumer Sales.
