Sydney man Taulanga Ki He Naupoto fined for hotel damage

A Tongan footy fan who caused more than $1000 damage to a Cairns hotel room during a drunken outburst after a Rugby League World Cup game has been fined and ordered to pay the damage bill.

Sydney man and father-of-one Taulanga Ki He Naupoto, flew to Cairns last month to watch his side defeat Scotland at Barlow Park.

The Cairns Magistrates Court heard yesterday he had been drinking heavily during the day and continued drinking at his hotel room.

His solicitor Derek Perkins told the court he became angry after drunkenly believing his friend had “made a pass” at his partner, smashing a glass table and damaging a television.

The court heard he then tried to scale down the outside of the building before falling two storeys to the ground.

Magistrate Robert Spencer fined him $500 and ordered he pay $1000 for damage to the room.
