Mangroves will be the focus of a workshop that is being planned to be held in Nuku’alofa, Tonga next week.
The programme which is aimed at helping to conduct the ecosystem risk assessment of Tonga’s Mangrove Ecosystem and develop monitoring system, is being coordinated by the Department of Environment, under the Ministry of MEIDECC
The ‘Tonga Red List of Ecosystems – Expert Data Workshop’ will be held on 22-24 October at the MEIDECC Conference Room.
The project aims to enable the documentation of the role of bidioversity in disaster risk management and convening related capacity building development in the Pacific.
“The project will build on the RELIEF kit project in 2017 which carried out regional assessment for Oceania and regional capacity building workshop for policy makers on biodiversity ecosystems and disaster risk reductions for climate change adaptations,” the information paper on the workshop stated.
The aim of the workshop is to identify and restore critical areas where mangroves has been lost, focusing on urban areas of Nuku’alofa.
Participants will be able to learn about the IUCN Red Lit of Ecosystems and what are included in that.
The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems is a tool that can provide the baseline to inform sustainable management and plan appropriate conservation and restoration actions particularly for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA).
