Tonga PM recovering well, expected to attend swearing in of Parliament

Prime Minister ‘Akilisi Pōhiva has been in good spirits since Monday night after being taken to Vaiola Hospital on Friday night.

Pohiva is expected to attend the swearing in ceremony of Members of Parliament in Nuku’alofa on Thursday.

Kaniva News reports Pōhiva is in a stable condition.

A Ministry of Health spokesperson said Pohiva was moved to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit after a decision to keep him undisturbed by visitors and other patients at the hospital.

He said the Prime Minister needs to have good rest.

Health authorities did not disclose his illness.

A medical evacuation to New Zealand was planned but later cancelled.
