Tongan Film Maker celebrates Emmy Award

Pacific film making got a massive boost with a sports documentary by Tongan film director Tony Vainuku scoring an Emmy in New York.

Vainuku and film making partner Erika Cohn won Outstanding Business and Economic Documentary at the 38th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards.

In Sports We Trust deals with the social and family pressures on four Samoan and Tongan high school gridiron stars chasing multi-million dollar contracts in football league.

Pacific Radio News reports the gripping documentary features interviews with N F L superstars Troy Polamalu and Haloti Ngata as well as a close up into gang activity in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the influence of the Mormon Church.

Tongan filmmaker Tony Vainuku says getting the Emmy for the doco has been surreal.
