Tongan leaders condemn police attack near rugby league fan zone

Tongan leaders in Auckland have condemned the attack on a female police officer in Ōtāhuhu over the weekend.

It is understood the policewoman was knocked unconscious at around 10pm near the fan zone after Tonga beat Lebanon in their Rugby League World Cup clash on Saturday.

PRN reports South Auckland community leader Salote Heletā Lilo says they will discuss the matter with Police and Auckland Council.

"I don't like to see that happen," she says. "They need to be more clear because it could've been someone else not a Mate Ma'a Tonga support person."

Lilo says they will also discuss whether they will hold another fan zone for this weekend's semi-finals clash between Tonga and England.
