Two Tongan brothers killed, four wounded in US shootings

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of two Tongan brothers in Oakland, California at the weekend.

Four other people including a 17-year-old girl, were wounded in a pair of shootings early Sunday in different areas of East Oakland, authorities said.

While the names of the brothers, one 21 and the other 26, have not yet been officially released, family members shared their names on social media.

Kaniva News reports the brothers have been identified as ‘Atiai and Suiti Mēsui.

They were shot about 1:55 a.m. Sunday outside their home in the 3700 block of High Street near Masterson Street.

Authorities said the men apparently got into some kind of confrontation with some other men and were shot.

East Bay Times reports they were pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspects fled on foot before police arrived on the scene.

Police are trying to determine what the confrontation was about.

The four wounded people were shot about 2:26 a.m. Sunday as they were driving in an SUV in the 1400 block of Eighth Avenue, police said.

Besides the 17-year-old girl, two women, both 18, and a 30-year-old man were wounded. They were able to drive to a hospital where they were all reported to be in stable condition.

Police believe they were deliberately targeted by more than one shooter standing in the street. A motive for the shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been made.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to USD $20,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrests of the suspects in both the double killing and the shooting that wounded four people.
