Fiji Navy checks on Tongans

The Fiji Navy is still trying to get as much information as possible on the six crew members of a Tongan ship that experienced mechanical problems and drifted into Kadavu waters last weekend.

Fiji Times reports Navy deputy commander Marika Vosawale said he could not divulge details until they received information about the Tongans.

The men, who were on board MV Sitka, are now at Kabariki Village, Nabukelevu, Kadavu, after their ship drifted last Saturday night between Muaninuku and Tabuya Island, near Kabariki Village.

The ship, which had been sold to a company in the Solomon Islands, was on a voyage to Honiara when it drifted.

Kabariki Village headman Sakeo Luvunakoro said police officers travelled to the village to take the statements of the six men. Mr Luvunakoro said the crew members sought assistance to return home because their visa only accommodated the trip to the Solomon Islands and not Fiji.
