Fugitive now napping in American Samoa?

The yacht Sea Oak sailed into American Samoa's Pago Pago Harbour this morning with a man on board believed to be the fugitive murder suspect Dean Jay Fletcher.

The yacht was last seen fleeing Tongan waters on Sunday after a dramatic five hour stand-off with Tongan police.

Mr Fletcher is wanted after escaping custody following the death of his wife.

She was found beaten to death while the couple were anchored in Vava'u.

A reporter with American Samoa's KHJ News, Tauva Esera, said the sole person on the yacht was a man with shoulder length hair in a pony tail.

The yacht was anchored at the inter-island dock next to the Department of Public Safety marine unit.

Immigration authorities had already boarded the vessel but RNZI's correspondent in Pago Pago reported they did not seem to know that a man on board was wanted in Tonga for murder.

A marine patrol officer said a team of police investigators had been to check out the yacht but it was understood they could not search the boat until a warrant was obtained.

It was not clear if there had been any contact between the local Department of Public Safety and the Tongan authorities.

KHJ News reported the man did not seem concerned and was having a nap on his yacht.
