Key players could be out for Hurricanes and Chiefs

Both the Hurricanes and Chiefs could be without their respective captains when they meet in the Super Rugby semi-final next weekend.

Dane Coles injured a rib in the Hurricanes 41-nil win over the Sharks, while Chiefs co-captain Sam Cane took a knock to the head in their 60 points to 21 win over the Stormers.

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd isn't confident about Coles' chances of playing.

"He's got a rib injury and is in a lot of pain so the doctor will do whatever he can and we should know more in the next 24 hours, but it doesn't look good."

However Boyd feels good about the cover they have at hooker.

"Yeah really comfortable in that space, Ricky Riccitelli and Leni Apisai, who has been the New Zealand under 20's captain, so we've got two good men in that space and we'll get a replacement for Colesy this week if we need to."

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie says he'll know more about Cane in the next few days.

"He's going to have to go through protocols, he was pretty clear straight after the game he didn't have any symptoms, but we need to see how he scrubs up tomorrow."

"Travelling makes it a little bit more difficult, but we're hopeful that he'll be right."

Rennie says they may investigate trying to get Liam Meesam eligible if Cane isn't available.

The other injury concern for the Chiefs is Stephen Donald who suffered a shoulder injury in the game.
