Educational programmes and talkback shows have been organised for Law Week in the Kingdom of Tonga.

Educational programmes and talkback shows have been organised for Law Week in the Kingdom of Tonga.

Acting Attorney General ‘Aminiasi Kefu said they want to enhance the public’s knowledge about the country’s laws.

He said about 70% of people who appear in court in Tonga do not have a legal representative or attorney for many reasons.

“A lot of postponements will take place in the processes and operation of the courts when most (people) who appear in court do not provide a legal representative and the possibility of the person who has a court case or in trial accusing and putting the courts at fault will also occur in times like this.’

‘So the theme for this week is to help avoid negative outcomes for those without legal representatives and to help enlighten and clarify the right of a person in court, not to mention that our office is open for any enquiries and inquisition regards personal cases or anything about the Law,” said Kefu.

The theme for Law Week is ‘The Law and the Right of the person who appears in Court.’

Kefu highlighted the importance of the Law week for this year as it also commemorates the 140th year of the Constitution of Tonga on November 4.

Tonga’s Constitution is number 9 in the world’s oldest Constitutions and the oldest in the Pacific region.
