Leicester Tigers star Telusa Veainu is named Tongan players' player of the year

Winger Telusa Veainu has capped a "crazy" few months by being voted the Tongan Players' Player of the Year.

The 24-year-old was presented with his award by Leicester Tigers team-mate, fellow Pacific Islander, Seremaia Bai.

Veainu was genuinely shocked to receive such an accolade and immediately dedicated the award to his Tongan team-mates.

The former Melbourne Rebel back only began playing for his country in the Pacific Nations Cup that preceded the World Cup. At that time, he was out of contract with the Rebels and wondering what to do.

New Zealand-raised Veainu then made such an impact during his time with his country, his services were courted by several clubs.

He chose Leicester having been attracted by the history of the club and the fact that he had worked with Kiwi coaching duo Aaron Mauger and Scott Hansen before during his time in the Canterbury set-up.

The fleet-footed winger already has four tries to his name in just five appearances and received his award with a big smile on his face.

"I am very thankful and grateful to win it. It has been a crazy few months," said Veainu.

"The Tongan Rugby Union threw me a lifeline after playing Super Rugby when I didn't really have anything going.

"The Tongan board rang me up and asked if I wanted to play for them and I said 'yes'.

"I had no idea what to expect from it but it really opened up my eyes. I was welcomed by the Tongan boys and it was good to get back to the roots of the Motherland with the senior boys showing me the ropes.

"When the Super Rugby season with the Rebels finished, I was just going to go home (to New Zealand) to chill out but then the opportunity to play for Tonga came around and I loved it.

"Then I waited around again to see if I was going to get picked for the World Cup.

"I did and, within three weeks, my whole world changed.

"I didn't expect too much game time but I got lots and I want to dedicate the award to the Tongan boys for welcoming me and accepting me," he added.
