Oily Tongan flag bearer will make his competitive Olympics debut Aug. 19

Many fans swooned while watching the Olympics with the debut of Tongan flag bearer and taekwondo competitor Pita Nikolas Taufatofua at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics.

Taufatofua became the first breakout star of this year's Olympic games after appearing shirtless with a traditional tupenu wrap and a shark tooth necklace in honor of his island home during the Parade of Nations.

His appearance provided a huge roar in the stadium when he appeared on the stadium video camera and prompted a collective meltdown on Twitter after he appeared with little more than his traditional Tongan "ta'ovala," a huge amount of coconut oil, flip-flops and a wide smile.

The coconut oil is traditional in his culture, he told the Chicago Tribune

"In any sort of special event we use coconut oil ... for glisten. But also if it's a fundraising event, people stick money to it. We use it quite a lot."

But he was surprised with the reaction he prompted because of his shiny appearance.

"It was being applied to me while I was holding the flag by a lovely lady behind me. She was just lathering it on and I had to ask her to stop because my shoes were starting to slip off and it was dripping down," he said.

"I didn't quite realize how much it was until I went on social media and saw how shiny I was."

We'll see the competitor behind the shine when the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Taufatofua competes in the 80 kg class in his sport on Aug. 19. He is not expected to medal, but hopes his presence sends a message anyway.

"What people see now is the guy who broke the internet covered in oil," he said.

"They don't see the struggle. They only see the shine... Everyone out there is on their own little journey and I want them to push through. I think people give up too easy."

Two nights later, the Olympics will conduct their closing ceremonies. Taufatofua hinted he's got another moment ready for social buzz when it closes.

"Don't blink or you'll miss it," he told the Tribune with a chuckle. "It's a secret."'

After his breakout appearance, the world no doubt will be watching again for the oily shirtless guy.
