Prince William becomes the first royal to appear on cover of a gay publication

Prince William is making history as the first member of the royal family to appear on the cover of a gay publication.

His Royal Highness, The Duke of Cambridge, will be on the cover of Attitude magazine next month.

The Duke invited the magazine to Kensington Palace along with nine members of the LGBT+ community.

He said: "No-one should be bullied for their sexuality or any other reason."

William wanted to hear their stories of homophobic, bi-phobic and transphobic bullying around mental health and the impact it had on them.

Those invited to the palace discussed how their personal accounts of bullying lead to low self-esteem problems, suicide attempts, eating disorders, depression and drug addiction including an unintentional overdose which led to the death of one young man.

Speaking to Attitude, the duke said: "No-one should have to put up with the kind of hate that these young people have endured in their lives.

"What I would say to any young person reading this who's being bullied for their sexuality. Don't put up with it - speak to a trusted adult, a friend, a teacher, ChildLine, Diana Award or some other service and get the help you need.

"You should be proud of the person you are and you have nothing to be ashamed of."

The duke has been working with the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry on mental health and well being leading the Heads Together campaign and they have started a taskforce to stop cyberbullying.

William was photographed by Leigh Kelly for the cover of the monthly LGBT+ magazine edited by Matthew Todd.

Todd added: "I am very happy that the future king of the United Kingdom agrees this must stop and I would urge parents in particular to raise their voices in their communities to ensure that every school protects - really protects - all children."
