Schedule change at Oceania meet

A change has been made in tomorrow’s (local time) schedule for the 2016 OFC Under-17 Women’s Championship.

The Papua New Guinea (PNG) versus Vanuatu match, which was originally supposed to be played at 2.30pm, will now be held at 7.30pm at the CIFA complex.

The opening match of the day will be played between host Cook Islands and Fiji at 5pm.

Tournament director Pauline Dean said both countries (PNG and Vanuatu) had faced visa issues which had delayed their flights.

Vanuatu arrived after midnight last night with Fiji, and PNG is scheduled to arrive at midday tomorrow.

“We have done the changes to the draws to allow PNG some recovery time before their opening match to Vanuatu. The match will now be played at 7.30pm,” Dean said.

CIFA complex floodlights were tested last year and Dean said they were up to par to meet the standards required at this level.

All preparations were on track and CIFA was ready to host the opening round of matches this afternoon.

New Caledonia will take on Tonga in the opening match of the championship at 2.30pm, followed by another Group A encounter between defending champions New Zealand and Samoa at 5pm.

The championship was officially opened by Minister for Sports Albert Nicholas on Monday at The Islander Hotel.

Meanwhile, a number of referees from the regional countries have jetted in and will be joined by three of our very own refs.
