Tonga’s 50 pa’anga note nominated for international bank note award

The Tongan 50 pa’anga note has been nominated for the IBNS Bank Note of the Year Award.

The note which was introduced on May 29, 2015 was nominated by Peter Goodchild.

The International Bank Note Society Banknote of the Year award is an initiative of the IBNS to recognize an exceptional banknote issued each year.

The Tongan 50 pa’anga note has on its front an image of King Tupou VI and the coat of arms.

The back of the note has the Royal Palace building and medallion.

The IBNS website said banknotes nominated must have been issued to the public (specimens and non-circulating currencies are inelligble) for the first time during the year of the award, and must have artistic merit and/or innovative security features, and be in general circulation.

The nominator must provide reasons for nomination.

Once nominations have closed, the winner will be decided by a vote of the IBNS, who will consider the artistic merit, design, use of colour, contrast, balance, and security features of each nomination.

The winner will be announced at the first IBNS Board meeting of the year.

Some of the other nominations include Israel’s new 200 Shekel note, Singapore’s 50 Dollar note and New Zealand’s 5 Dollar note.
