The Just Play Programme teamed up with the Tonga Football Association to deliver a day of fun and education for 101 local schoolgirls last week.

The festival was attended by 101 girls from local schools.

The festival was organised in support of breast cancer awareness, and was open to girls aged 10-13 from four local schools.

Parents of the children and teachers from the schools were also invited to take part.

As well as playing football the attendees were taught about the importance of early detection of breast cancer, with TFA general secretary Lui Aho believing the sport provides the ideal platform to pass on key health ideas.

"Football is a fun and effective way to reach every child with this vital message, and we are very happy we were able to do so through this festival,” Aho says.

“It was great to see our girls participating and having fun on the field, while also recognising mothers, sisters, aunties or friends who have battled breast cancer.”

Ministry of Education and Training representative Alifeleti Fonua attended the event as a guest of honour.
