Kiribati govt to look into expensive domestic air fares

The Kiribati government is promising to look into the cost of some domestic airfares after the opposition complained in parliament.

MP Uriam Tirae Iabeta asked the government during question time about the high cost of airfares from remote Teraina or Washington Island to Kiritimati.

He pointed out that government was subsidizing the route and asked for a review and whether cheaper fares were possible.

The minister for transport, Willie Tokataake, told the Maneaba ni Maungatabu, or parliament, that the fares were set by Air Kiribati but that his ministry would look into the matter.
